A Legacy of Innovation: Reflecting on Decades in Real Estate Publishing and the Future of REM

As I pen this, my final regular column, a profound sense of gratitude and reflection washes over me. To borrow the poignant words of a dear friend I lost some years ago, it has truly been a ‘slice’ – a remarkable and fulfilling journey that has shaped much of my life and career within the dynamic world of media and real estate.

The past few weeks have been particularly moving, filled with heartfelt messages from readers who have followed this column and REM over the years. Your kind words, your genuine well wishes for my retirement, and your shared memories have touched me deeply. I find myself humbled and, frankly, speechless by the overwhelming warmth and generosity of your sentiments. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being an integral part of this incredible journey.

Embracing a New Chapter: The Road Ahead and the Spirit of Optimism

Amidst these farewells, I’ve also received tremendous encouragement about the adventures that lie ahead – a new page, a fresh chapter in life’s grand narrative. Your optimism is truly infectious, and I am committed to carrying the spirit of your valuable advice and good cheer with me into the future. It’s a promise I intend to keep, drawing strength from the positive energy you’ve all so generously shared as I step into this new phase of life.

Looking back at my extensive career in this dynamic business, I distinctly recall two main stages that have defined my professional trajectory. The first began in 1968, marking my foundational years with the prestigious Toronto Star. This period was instrumental in shaping my journalistic principles, honing my craft, and understanding the profound impact of timely and accurate information dissemination. The second, and equally impactful stage, has been dedicated to working with and publishing specialized newspapers for the thriving real estate industry across Canada, a journey that brings me right up to this very week. This latter phase has been incredibly diverse, encompassing everything from the initial development of the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) MLS system to contributing to its accompanying newspaper and, ultimately, helming this esteemed publication, REM.

The Genesis of Real Estate Information: Printing the Future in the Past

It’s fascinating to recall a time when the bedrock of real estate information was far removed from the digital screens and instant access we now take for granted. Back in those pioneering days, we had fully operational printing presses housed right within the TREB offices. Imagine the scene: the rhythmic roar of heavy machinery, the distinct, pervasive scent of ink, the floors occasionally stained with its residue, and the intricate dance of greased gears – all part of the daily ritual that brought critical market data to life.

These presses would rumble into action every single day, meticulously printing thousands of pages filled with the very latest property listings. These weren’t just any listings; they featured photographs captured just the day before, meticulously assembled with descriptive copy, and then printed onto vast quantities of paper. Each page was then carefully perforated with holes, perfectly sized to fit into the small, specialized binders carried by nearly every board member. Every day, TREB staff would undertake the significant and labor-intensive task of delivering these fresh pages to members across the city. Upon receipt, agents would diligently separate the new additions and insert them into their binders, ensuring their clients had access to the most current properties on the market, ready for presentation.

This manual, yet incredibly efficient, system allowed us to process thousands of new listings and have them distributed within a remarkable 48-hour window. It was a logistical marvel for its era, a testament to dedication and meticulous organization. We took immense pride in our ability to achieve such rapid turnaround, ensuring agents were always equipped with up-to-the-minute information in a pre-digital world. This process truly set the standard for information delivery at the time, a feat many today might find hard to conceptualize given the instantaneous nature of modern data access.

Indeed, one can scarcely imagine the reactions of modern real estate professionals if they were to enter their board offices today and encounter such a scene: thunderous printing presses, ink-stained floors, and the pervasive aroma of machinery grease, all to be navigated simply to reach a committee meeting room. Yet, that was the vibrant reality of information dissemination then, a tactile and energetic process that underscored the industry’s relentless pursuit of efficiency and unparalleled client service.

Pioneering the Digital Frontier: Real Estate’s Unsung Role in Information Technology

As you well know, the landscape of information evolved dramatically and at an astonishing pace. The incredible innovations in information gathering, processing, and distribution, driven by the advent of computers and the internet, appeared to be an unending developmental process, yet they transformed our world completely in a mere few short years from their inception. What continues to vex me, even to this day, is the insufficient recognition accorded to the real estate industry for its pivotal role as a true pioneer in developing these groundbreaking digital systems.

Long before many sectors fully embraced digital transformation, the real estate industry, fueled by the urgent need for timely, accurate, and widespread data sharing, was at the absolute forefront of creating sophisticated information networks. Many of the robust digital infrastructures and vast databases utilized by government agencies and massive commercial operations today trace their conceptual roots and fundamental design principles back to systems first conceived and implemented by Canada’s real estate industry. We were driven by necessity and the competitive edge, developing intricate listing services and data management tools that laid significant groundwork for the digital age and proved the immense value of interconnected databases.

As these monumental technological shifts began to unfold, the well-meaning, dedicated professionals – the “working stiffs” like myself – recognized the most constructive path forward. Our greatest contribution to this generational development was, quite simply, to get out of the way. It was an acknowledgment that a new era demanded new expertise, new perspectives, and a fresh approach. This wasn’t a retreat, but a strategic pivot, allowing the next generation of innovators and digital natives to take the reins and accelerate the industry’s digital evolution, ensuring its continued relevance and advancement.

Besides, while the technological landscape was shifting, our core mission remained. Realtors, ever the astute professionals, continued to value and rely on trusted news sources. They still actively absorbed vital information and critical news pertinent to their industry from reputable publications. Our role, then, transitioned to ensuring that whatever content we produced and distributed – whether through emerging digital channels or enduring print formats – maintained the highest standards of good, solid reporting, reliable information, and impactful news. This commitment to journalistic integrity has never wavered and has been the guiding principle throughout my tenure. It has been an immense privilege to produce a monthly publication that has consistently delivered valued information and crucial news to the real estate industry, acting as a vital conduit for professional development and market insight.

The Enduring Evolution of REM: Integrity Unchanged, Reach Expanded

Today, we find ourselves once again in the midst of another significant generational transformation. REM, like the dynamic industry it serves, is continually adapting and evolving to meet the demands of a rapidly changing media landscape. However, I want to emphasize with absolute certainty that this evolution will never compromise the foundational integrity of its information, nor its unwavering commitment to presenting exclusive, in-depth news for the real estate industry that truly cannot be found anywhere else. That bedrock principle, the core of REM’s mission and its value proposition, is immutable and will never change.

REM has significantly expanded its reach, now distributed through a diverse array of methods and mediums to ensure it reaches real estate professionals wherever they are and however they prefer to consume information. In addition to our cherished monthly print edition, REM boasts a dynamic electronic newsletter, a comprehensive and frequently updated website serving as a central hub for breaking news and archived content, and will soon introduce even more innovative ways for readers to access front-line news. Crucially, every single piece of content, regardless of its distribution channel, will always be meticulously researched, thoroughly vetted, and presented with the utmost objectivity and honesty. This commitment to reliable, unbiased reporting remains paramount in an age of information overload.

In light of this continuous evolution and the exciting new directions REM is taking, it is time for me to make the decision that best serves the publication’s future. Just as I learned to step aside for technological progress and new generations of talent, I will now gracefully step out of the way, confident that REM is poised for even greater success and continued innovation in its next chapter.

Passing the Torch: A New Era for REM Leadership

As I transition into retirement, I am delighted to confirm that REM’s esteemed editorial direction remains in the highly capable hands of Jim Adair, its founding editor. Jim’s profound understanding of the industry, his sharp journalistic acumen, and his unwavering dedication have been absolutely instrumental in shaping REM into the respected and authoritative publication it is today. Rest assured, under his continued, steadfast guidance, the editorial integrity and commitment to quality reporting of this publication remain absolutely intact and will only continue to flourish and strengthen.

Equally vital to REM’s continued success and sustained growth is its robust commercial foundation. Marketing and sales responsibilities are expertly managed by Amanda Rock, whose competence, strategic vision, and deep understanding of the industry are truly invaluable. Amanda will continue to be your dedicated partner, helping you navigate the diverse advertising opportunities within REM to find the absolute best fit for your marketing needs, ensuring your message effectively reaches our highly engaged and influential audience of real estate professionals across Canada.

From this point forward, I am thrilled to announce that the new publisher, the “new sheriff in charge,” is William Molls. William brings a wealth of media experience, a keen understanding of digital landscapes, and a forward-thinking vision to REM. A distinguished graduate of Ryerson’s highly regarded Radio and Television program, he has honed his skills through significant tenures with prominent media outlets such as CTV, Much Music, and City TV in Toronto. More recently, William has been the brilliant architect behind REM’s robust website and its expanding online presence, playing a crucial role in modernizing our digital footprint and enhancing our accessibility.

William Molls is exceptionally well-positioned and uniquely qualified to lead REM into its next exciting phase of growth and innovation, leveraging both traditional strengths and new digital avenues. I wholeheartedly ask that you extend to him the same immense kindness, thoughtful consideration, and valuable suggestions that you have so generously offered to me throughout my years here. Your collective wisdom, ongoing engagement, and unwavering support will be absolutely invaluable as William guides REM into an even brighter and more expansive future.
