In the vibrant, often challenging world of entrepreneurship, whether in real estate or any other demanding vocation, maintaining peak motivation, unwavering passion, and consistent momentum can feel like an uphill battle. The initial allure of entrepreneurship is undeniably powerful: the promise of being your own boss, the freedom from income ceilings, and the empowerment of total autonomy. These visions fuel countless aspiring professionals.
However, the reality often presents a stark contrast. As esteemed mentor Brian Buffini wisely points out, you might find yourself to be a less-than-ideal boss – perhaps too lenient, allowing discipline to wane, or excessively strict, leading to burnout. While the potential for earnings may indeed be limitless, there’s also no safety net; the floor can drop out without warning. The absolute autonomy that once seemed so liberating can quickly morph into profound isolation, leaving entrepreneurs feeling remarkably alone in their journey.
Maximize Your Conference Experience: Four Steps to Sustained Entrepreneurial Success
Real Estate: A Unique Industry Rewarding Relationships
The perpetual struggle to sustain a high level of motivation and consistently propel oneself toward ambitious goals is precisely why real estate sales conferences remain incredibly popular. Picture this: hundreds, sometimes thousands, of real estate professionals converge in exciting, distant locales – think vibrant cities like Las Vegas, historic Halifax, bustling Toronto, energetic Dallas, or sunny San Diego. For a few immersive days, the outside world seems to fade away.
Attendees dive into engaging material, meticulously taking notes, perhaps picking up a new book or two for future inspiration. The air buzzes with networking opportunities, as agents connect with peers, hoping a stimulating conversation might forge a valuable connection and, ideally, lead to a coveted referral. Ah, the thrill of referrals! They are, without a doubt, the lifeblood of many real estate businesses.
Pro-Tip: Embrace the Referral Economy Now! If you haven’t fully embraced the power of referrals, now is the time to jump on board. Real estate stands almost alone among industries in offering you a tangible, monetary reward for cultivating strong relationships. These connections often take years to build and represent a significant investment of time and effort. You absolutely deserve a referral fee when you connect a client with a trusted colleague in another market. Mastering referrals is a game-changer for long-term success. (Stay tuned for an upcoming article dedicated entirely to optimizing your referral strategy, but seriously, start prioritizing it today!)
Beyond the Conference Hype: Sustaining Momentum
My own journey has taken me to a wide array of transformative conferences, including Buffini & Company’s Mastermind, Turning Point, Success Tour, Masterclass, and Peak events. I’ve also gained insights from Kathleen Black Coaching Company, Richard Robbins International, Tony Robbins’ “Unleash the Power Within,” Tom Ferry’s immersive programs, and Royal Lepage’s National Sales Conference. In addition, I’ve participated in large-scale industry gatherings such as TRREB’s Realtor Quest and “The Power of Success” in Toronto.
Indeed, the sheer number of available conferences can be overwhelming. Some might even argue there are too many.
Attending a truly exceptional conference can be an exhilarating experience, leaving you feeling like a completely revitalized individual. There’s a certain “cult-like” energy, a collective optimism that’s infectious and, in the moment, incredibly beneficial. We “drink the Kool-Aid,” and for a short while, it genuinely feels good. Upon returning home, our friends and family might be slightly bewildered by our newfound, top-tier energy levels, but it’s generally met with good humor. The challenge, however, lies in the inevitable — that potent wave of motivation and “whoop-whoop” enthusiasm eventually begins to recede.
As the legendary Zig Ziglar famously observed, “Motivation doesn’t last, so you need to take it daily, like a bath.” But, unlike bathing, attending a conference every day simply isn’t feasible. So, how do we ensure our significant investments of time, money, and precious energy translate into sustained business growth and a more joyful, fulfilled version of ourselves?
We often become so captivated by the intoxicating hype of a conference – the pulsating music, the electric energy, the immersive environment, and that intoxicating feeling of being utterly unstoppable – that we lose sight of their true purpose. Conferences are designed to serve as powerful booster packs *for* our entrepreneurial journey, not the journey itself. They are akin to a high-octane fuel injection, propelling us forward. “Let’s GO!!!!” is the rallying cry. Yet, the goal should not be to attend multiple conferences every single year out of necessity. Are they enjoyable? Absolutely. Are they expensive? Undeniably. Is it easy to mistake a conference for a well-deserved vacation? You bet your boots it is.
Therefore, the crucial question becomes: how do we guarantee that our substantial commitment of time and capital (and that invaluable, often overlooked commodity: energy!) genuinely translates into a more successful business and a more genuinely joyful, thriving self?
The answer, though perhaps less glamorous than the conference experience itself, is fundamental: WORK. We must consistently put in the effort. Nothing truly valuable or lasting comes without diligent application and persistent effort.
With that understanding, here are four essential steps to transforming your conference experience into a springboard for enduring success:
1. Connection: Building Bridges, Not Just Collecting Cards
Walking into a large conference can feel remarkably similar to the first day of high school. You might recognize a few faces and instinctively gravitate towards them, finding comfort in familiarity. While connecting with known acquaintances has its merits, it’s equally crucial to intentionally create space for new relationships. You’re in a room filled with like-minded professionals, all sharing similar aspirations and challenges. The chances of finding common ground and forging meaningful connections are incredibly high.
When engaging in conversations, ensure you exchange information beyond a fleeting chat. Whether it’s business cards, email addresses, cell numbers, or social media handles, make it a point to establish a tangible link. Crucially, send a follow-up note shortly after the conference. This simple act of remembrance can set you apart. And here’s a critical piece of advice: immediately input all new contacts into your business referral database. Avoid becoming the person whose desk is perpetually adorned with a pile of unfiled business cards from years past.
Pro-tip: Personalize Your Follow-Up. When you exchange contact information, make a quick, discreet note of their name and a specific detail from your conversation. Perhaps they mentioned a hobby, a challenge they’re facing, or a common interest. Following up with an email, text, or even a handwritten note (for a truly memorable touch) that references that specific detail will genuinely make their day. “It was wonderful meeting you, [Name], and I especially enjoyed our discussion about [specific conversation point].” This demonstrates you were truly listening and value the connection.
Aim to meet, connect with, or deepen a relationship with at least three new individuals at every conference you attend. Move beyond superficial small talk. As Vanessa Van Edwards, a behavioral investigator, advocates, ask engaging, open-ended questions designed to foster deeper connections and uncover shared values or experiences. Focus on genuine curiosity rather than surface-level pleasantries.
Pro-tip: Focus on Similarities to Build Rapport. While it’s tempting to highlight your unique qualities and differences, especially in initial interactions, constantly emphasizing what makes you distinct can inadvertently create a barrier. Be authentic, but consciously seek out commonalities. Finding shared interests, challenges, or experiences will accelerate the bond-building process and foster a sense of belonging much faster.
2. Learning and Growing: Immersive Engagement, Lasting Impact
Conferences, by design, offer a substantial dose of enjoyment, and that’s perfectly fine. It’s healthy to balance intensive learning with moments of leisure and fun. However, it’s vital to remember that the primary purpose isn’t simply playtime. If it were, you’d merely be on an incredibly expensive vacation, likely without your closest family or friends. Your attendance is an investment in your professional development.
Commit to staying fully engaged. Take meticulous notes and truly listen. Resist the urge to constantly check your phone. While we all believe our real estate careers are of paramount importance and require constant attention, an hour or two offline during a session will not cause your business to collapse. Consider this analogy: if you were in a crucial listing appointment with a client, would you abruptly halt the conversation to text another client? Of course not. Why then would you interrupt this vital “appointment” with yourself and your personal development?
Many conferences provide workbooks, which are incredibly helpful tools. They structure your learning and implicitly encourage active participation (or at least ensure you’re sitting next to an excellent note-taker!). Buffini conferences, for instance, excel at this, meticulously outlining key points from every main presentation. This structured approach makes it significantly easier to recall and apply the information later.
Beyond the provided materials, jot down any recommended books or resources (aiming to read 10+ pages a day from a personal growth book is a highly achievable goal for anyone). Capture your spontaneous thoughts and reflections during the talks. These insights can be valuable conversation starters during breaks, allowing you to discuss topics with colleagues and gain diverse perspectives you might not have considered on your own.
3. Reflecting: Consolidating Knowledge, Charting Action
Having dedicated your time to forging connections with like-minded individuals (LMIs) and deeply immersing yourself in the learning process throughout the conference, the next crucial step is to solidify that newfound knowledge and experience through a period of thoughtful, old-fashioned reflection.
Engage in activities that naturally facilitate contemplation for you. This could mean a brisk walk, a session at the gym, a swim, meditation, or journaling. The goal is to create mental space. Deliberately think about what you’ve learned and, more importantly, how you can realistically implement these insights into both your business practices and your personal life. What were the standout moments or revelations? Are there any key takeaways you could share with colleagues, family, or friends who weren’t present, thereby reinforcing your own understanding?
Reflection is the bridge between acquisition and application, transforming transient information into actionable wisdom. It allows you to synthesize ideas, identify patterns, and personalize the lessons learned, ensuring they resonate with your unique goals and circumstances.
4. Rediscovery: Unearthing Your Authentic Power
During a recent conference, Brian Buffini eloquently articulated the concept of “rediscovery” over “reinvention.” In our social media-saturated world, we are constantly bombarded with advertisements urging us to escape for six months and return as a “new you.” Whether the focus is fitness, health, business acumen, financial mastery, or enhanced beauty, the siren song of a complete transformation seems incredibly alluring. But to what ultimate end? The authentic “YOU” resides within; it is your inherent essence and will invariably resurface. Instead of trying to construct an entirely new persona, dedicate time to understanding and appreciating the qualities that make your authentic self so remarkable. Embark on the profound journey of rediscovery today.
There is immense power and undeniable confidence in simply being yourself. Our contemporary culture often romanticizes radical change, painting it as a sexy and desirable path. However, this narrative often serves the many industries that profit when we constantly seek quick fixes and easy paths to an idealized life. True, sustainable growth often stems from within.
It’s equally important to lean into whatever genuinely ignites your soul, whatever makes you feel unstoppable, as if the universe itself is giving you a high five. This might require additional reflection and deeper rediscovery, but ask yourself: What do you truly love to do? And, perhaps more critically, if you’re not actively pursuing these passions, why not?
For instance, I have a profound love for leading, mentoring, guiding, and coaching. It is a true privilege to exercise these passions daily with my real estate clients and colleagues. My passion for sharing knowledge and experiences is immense, and I am excited to reach new heights alongside my “marble jar people,” as Brené Brown so aptly puts it. I also adore writing and sharing insights, which led me to launch a podcast, start a blog, and even embark on writing a book.
For a long time, I hesitated to pursue these endeavors, believing I needed an official invitation or an abundance of extra time or money. But here’s the profound truth: when you genuinely and resolutely decide you want to achieve something or possess a certain outcome, the universe often conspires to provide you with every conceivable opportunity to realize that goal.
However, your participation is non-negotiable. You must take consistent, deliberate steps towards your aspirations. You will find the time. You will find the resources. But first, you must believe it is possible. As Anna Buffini powerfully stated at a recent conference, “You don’t need to see the light at the end of the tunnel. You just need to believe that there is a light.”
May your next conference be everything you dream it will be, and so much more. The journey to sustained success is a marathon, not a sprint, and these essential steps will help you maximize every stride.
I’ll probably see you there, ready to connect, learn, reflect, and rediscover.
