In a year marked by unprecedented challenges, the Durham Region Association of Realtors (DRAR) has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to community welfare, successfully raising an impressive sum exceeding $45,000 for local charitable organizations. This remarkable philanthropic effort underscores DRAR members’ dedication to supporting the vibrant communities in which they live and work, proving that even amidst global difficulties, the spirit of generosity can shine brightly.

The funds collected in 2020 have been thoughtfully allocated to DRAR’s four designated Charities of Choice, each playing a vital role in addressing critical needs across the Durham Region. These esteemed recipients include the Dreams & Wishes Children’s Charity, Luke’s Place, the Nanny Angel Network, and Shine Through the Rain. Each organization contributes uniquely to the fabric of the community, offering essential services and support to vulnerable individuals and families.

DRAR’s Enduring Commitment to Community Wellbeing

The Durham Region Association of Realtors has long been recognized not just as a professional body dedicated to real estate excellence, but also as a profound force for positive change within its community. Beyond facilitating property transactions, DRAR members embody a deep sense of social responsibility, consistently channeling their collective energy and resources toward impactful charitable initiatives. This philanthropic legacy is an integral part of DRAR’s identity, fostering stronger, healthier, and more supportive environments for all residents.

DRAR President, Michael Watson, emphasized the significance of this year’s fundraising achievements. “This year, once again, our dedicated Realtor members stepped up, raising much-needed funds and providing vital support to our Charities of Choice,” Watson stated. “During these truly unprecedented times, the demand for their services has intensified, making our support more crucial than ever before. We faced significant hurdles, including the difficult decision to postpone our annual Charity Golf Tournament, a cornerstone of our fundraising efforts. However, we were incredibly pleased to adapt and successfully run a smaller, modified tournament, strictly adhering to all health and safety guidelines to ensure the well-being of our participants.”

This inspiring organization is dedicated to providing comfort and essential resources to children and their mothers who are navigating incredibly difficult circumstances, often residing in shelters due to abuse, domestic violence, homelessness, substance abuse, and mental illness. The charity’s work is directly impactful, offering a beacon of hope and practical assistance during times of crisis. Denise Stahl, President and Founder of Dreams & Wishes Children’s Charity, highlighted the increased struggles brought on by the pandemic. “COVID-19 has severely impacted the families we serve, as well as our donor base,” Stahl explained. “Abuse, domestic violence, homelessness, substance abuse, and mental illness have all seen a distressing increase. Any funds raised by DRAR are directly channeled to children and their mothers within Durham Region shelters, providing immediate and tangible relief.”

This organization provides essential legal information, support, and resources, empowering survivors to rebuild their lives free from abuse. DRAR’s support helps Luke’s Place continue its vital mission of advocacy and empowerment.

  • Nanny Angel Network

The Nanny Angel Network offers a unique and invaluable service by providing free, specialized childcare to mothers undergoing cancer treatment. • Shine Through the Rain

Shine Through the Rain is committed to providing immediate financial and emotional support to individuals and families facing the devastating impact of life-threatening illnesses. This charity helps alleviate some of the immense pressures associated with severe health crises, covering expenses like medication, specialized equipment, or temporary housing, allowing families to concentrate on healing and recovery rather than financial strain.

Adapting and Innovating: Fundraising in a Pandemic

The year 2020 presented unprecedented challenges for charitable organizations worldwide, and the Durham Region was no exception. Traditional fundraising methods were disrupted, and the needs of vulnerable populations escalated dramatically. DRAR responded to these challenges with resilience and innovation, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to its chosen charities.

Early in the year, DRAR’s Charities of Choice received a significant boost of $5,400 through the esteemed 2020 Ontario Realtors Care Foundation Grant. This grant provided crucial initial funding, setting a positive tone for the year’s fundraising efforts despite the looming pandemic.

Recognizing the limitations imposed by public health restrictions, DRAR swiftly adapted its strategies. A highlight of their innovative approach was the launch of their first-ever online auction. This new digital initiative proved to be a resounding success, garnering generous donations from local businesses and raising over $10,000. The online auction not only compensated for the inability to hold larger in-person events but also expanded the reach of DRAR’s fundraising efforts, engaging a broader segment of the community.

Furthermore, DRAR organized a series of smaller, COVID-safe events to maintain momentum. One such impactful event was the Realtors Care Week activity held on November 25th. This initiative exemplified the hands-on commitment of DRAR members, resulting in a substantial donation of $1,000 worth of non-perishable food items. Additionally, a generous monetary contribution of $5,000 was directed to Feed the Need in Durham, an organization vital to addressing food insecurity in the region. These collective efforts highlight DRAR’s multifaceted approach to community support, combining direct aid with strategic financial contributions.

The Collective Power of Realtors: Building Stronger Communities

The success of DRAR’s charitable endeavors is a testament to the collective strength and generosity of its members. Michael Watson reiterated his profound gratitude, stating, “We are extremely grateful to everyone who supported our charitable events throughout the year. This includes the dedicated individuals and businesses who contributed to our online auction, participated in our modified golf tournament, and especially those who made our Realtors Care Week event such a success.”

Watson concluded by acknowledging the indispensable role of every member: “This challenging year would simply not have been a success without the unwavering support and incredible generosity of our Realtors in the community. Their commitment goes beyond property sales; it’s about building and sustaining strong, compassionate communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”

The funds raised by DRAR will have a tangible and immediate impact on the lives of countless individuals and families in Durham Region. From providing safe haven for mothers and children fleeing violence to offering critical support for those battling severe illness, DRAR’s philanthropic initiatives are directly contributing to a healthier, more resilient, and more equitable community. This dedication reinforces the notion that Realtors are not just experts in housing; they are active, caring citizens deeply invested in the wellbeing of their neighbors.

Looking Forward: Sustaining the Spirit of Giving

As the Durham Region Association of Realtors looks ahead, the spirit of giving and community engagement remains at the core of its mission. The innovative strategies developed during 2020 have paved the way for future fundraising models, ensuring that DRAR can continue to adapt and expand its philanthropic reach. The lessons learned in navigating a global pandemic have only strengthened the resolve of DRAR members to stand by their community, providing essential support to those who need it most.

DRAR’s commitment to its Charities of Choice and to the broader Durham Region community is an inspiring example of how professional associations can leverage their influence and resources for significant social good. Through sustained effort, creativity, and the heartfelt dedication of its members, DRAR continues to be a powerful force for positive change, enriching lives and fostering a brighter future for all.
