Royal LePage Nanaimo’s Ecuador Expedition to Combat Domestic Violence

Royal LePage Challenge for Shelter: Real Estate Professionals Conquer Ecuador’s Andes for Domestic Violence Support

In a remarkable demonstration of resilience, compassion, and collective purpose, 115 dedicated Royal LePage professionals from across Canada embarked on an extraordinary journey last November: the company’s biannual Challenge for Shelter trekking fundraiser. This time, the formidable adventure led them to the breathtaking yet challenging Andes Mountains of Ecuador. Far more than a mere test of physical endurance, this challenge served as a powerful testament to their unwavering commitment to a critical social cause: providing essential support to local women’s shelters and advancing vital national domestic violence prevention programs.

Over five grueling days, participants navigated rugged, high-altitude terrain, enduring the elements and tent camping in conditions that pushed their limits. Their collective efforts culminated in an astounding $1.7 million raised, a truly vital contribution that will undoubtedly provide much-needed refuge, comprehensive support, and renewed hope to countless individuals and families escaping the devastating impacts of domestic violence across Canada.

We had the distinct privilege of speaking with two inspiring participants, Jana Koster and Tina Lynch of Royal LePage Nanaimo Realty. They generously shared profound insights into their motivations, the challenges they overcame, their unique experiences on the trek, and the lasting personal and societal impact of this life-changing expedition.

The Driving Force: Unveiling the Inspiration Behind Their Participation

A Deepened Commitment Amidst Global Crisis

Jana Koster (JK): My long-standing support for the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation has always been a cornerstone of my professional and personal values. However, the unprecedented global crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic amplified the urgent, desperate need for support in a way I hadn’t witnessed before. As lockdowns forced people into prolonged periods at home, away from work and school, a darker, more insidious reality emerged for many women and children. They found themselves tragically confined with their abusers, often in environments where stress levels were at an all-time high, creating unbearable and dangerous domestic situations.

This journey to Ecuador marked my second participation in the Challenge for Shelter. My inaugural experience, two years prior, involved navigating the rugged and beautiful Purcell Mountains in British Columbia. When the Shelter Foundation courageously announced its determination to proceed with a trek in 2020, despite global travel restrictions necessitating it to remain within Canada, I knew, unequivocally, that it was my time to step up once again. The mission resonates profoundly with me, reinforcing the fundamental belief that everyone deserves a safe, secure haven, especially during times of immense crisis. Every single step taken, every dollar meticulously raised, felt like a direct, tangible contribution to securing that fundamental human right for vulnerable individuals.

Answering the Dual Call: Adventure Meets Community Impact

Tina Lynch (TL): For me, the decision to participate in the Challenge for Shelter was almost an automatic response, a resounding “yes” from the moment I learned about it. I’ve always been profoundly drawn to the majesty of mountains and the exhilarating thrill of adventure, so the opportunity to seamlessly combine that personal passion with an initiative that profoundly benefited my community felt like a perfect, natural alignment. It was, as I recall, an immediate “my-hand-is-up” kind of moment, an undeniable call to action.

I was incredibly fortunate to have been raised in a loving, supportive, and stable family environment. However, my father’s childhood was markedly different, fraught with significant challenges that he and his family navigated. Reflecting on his formative experiences, I often wished there had been more accessible options and robust support systems available for them during those difficult early years. This deeply personal history fuels my unwavering desire to contribute actively to initiatives that expand possibilities, provide crucial safety nets, and offer tangible support for women and families who find themselves navigating challenging, often perilous, circumstances. The Royal LePage Challenge for Shelter offered not just a physical endeavor, but a tangible, impactful way to channel my love for the outdoors into meaningful social change, thereby helping to create the very opportunities and safe havens for others that my own family might have profoundly benefited from in the past.

Overcoming Obstacles: From Fundraising Fears to Personal Anxiety and Triumph

Navigating the Intricacies of Fundraising in a Close-Knit Community

TL: Initially, I harbored two significant, looming hesitations when I first contemplated participating in the Challenge. My primary concern revolved around the formidable task of fundraising: how, precisely, was I going to manage to raise the minimum required amount? Living in a relatively small community of only 5,000 residents, the landscape is dotted with numerous other incredibly worthy organizations constantly vying for much-needed funds. I worried intensely about saturating the local giving pool and whether I could genuinely generate sufficient, sustained support specifically for the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation, knowing the community’s generosity was already stretched.

Conquering the Fear of the Unknown and Embracing Camaraderie

My second, and perhaps even more potent, hesitation stemmed from my personal battle with anxiety. The mere thought of stepping into an entirely new, unfamiliar environment, knowing absolutely no one among the 115 participants, was deeply intimidating and triggered significant apprehension. I distinctly recall being so overwhelmed by anxiety that I was physically ill, literally throwing up just before boarding the plane to Ecuador. It was a powerful, visceral fear of the unknown, of navigating entirely new social dynamics and facing unfamiliar physical and emotional challenges all at once, without a pre-established support network.

However, that profound apprehension quickly and thankfully dissipated upon my arrival. As soon as I made contact with “group 1” via WhatsApp, an immense wave of relief washed over me. I discovered, to my immense comfort, that I was surrounded by an incredible cohort of individuals, all united by a singular, powerful common purpose: to do something inherently positive, to drive meaningful and lasting change for others. The shared dedication to the cause instantly fostered a deep sense of camaraderie, belonging, and mutual support. In that moment, I realized there was truly nothing to worry about; the fear had simply been a product of my imagination, a daunting mental hurdle swiftly overcome by the powerful, unifying sense of collective mission and unwavering mutual encouragement that pervaded the group.

A Collective Triumph: Royal LePage Nanaimo Realty’s Impactful Fundraising Journey

Direct Impact: Fueling Shelters and Essential Education

The realtors from Royal LePage Nanaimo Realty showcased truly remarkable generosity and unwavering dedication, collectively raising an impressive sum of nearly $29,000 for the Challenge for Shelter. This substantial contribution flows directly into the core mission of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation. A foundational principle of their operational model is unparalleled efficiency: Royal LePage proudly and completely covers all administrative costs associated with the Foundation. This critical commitment ensures that an incredible 100 percent of every single dollar raised directly benefits women’s shelters and crucial educational initiatives specifically focused on preventing domestic violence across the nation.

JK: My personal fundraising efforts for the trek reached an impressive $12,473.50. It’s incredibly rewarding and validating to know with certainty that 80 percent of the funds we diligently raise are channeled directly back into our local community, specifically benefiting Haven Society, which is our vital local shelter situated in Nanaimo. This localized support ensures that the impact is tangible, immediate, and directly addresses the needs of those in our immediate vicinity. The remaining balance is thoughtfully dedicated to national education initiatives. These programs play a crucial, overarching role in raising widespread awareness, fostering deeper understanding, and ultimately contributing to the prevention of domestic violence across the entirety of Canada. This strategic dual approach maximizes both immediate local relief and long-term widespread impact, creating a comprehensive support system.

Innovative Fundraising and a Wave of Community Support

TL: Beyond the trek’s direct, focused fundraising efforts, it’s particularly significant to note that many realtors within the Royal LePage network consistently donate a portion of their earned commissions to the Foundation as an ongoing commitment. While this continuous contribution isn’t explicitly factored into the $1.7 million total raised specifically from this Ecuador trek, it represents an incredibly important, sustained stream of support that underpins the Foundation’s long-term operational efforts and ensures its continued impact.

For my individual fundraising endeavor, I tapped into a unique and heartwarming family tradition. My mom and sister, who had originally launched our family real estate business on Gabriola Island, enthusiastically joined forces with me to knit custom, cozy toques. This creative and deeply personal fundraising approach proved surprisingly successful and provided a wonderful, tangible avenue for my family to actively contribute to the cause. The remarkable success of this initiative was truly amazing, serving as a powerful demonstration that genuine community spirit, coupled with innovative, heartfelt ideas, can yield profoundly significant results.

My journey towards the trek was also profoundly bolstered by an overwhelming outpouring of support from local businesses. Many generously sponsored my training gear, proudly displaying their logos as I meticulously prepared for the arduous trek. Furthermore, my dedicated circle of friends and family consistently rallied around me, often joining my grueling training sessions. This frequently meant rising at ungodly hours, sometimes as early as 4:30 AM, to haul weighted backpacks up challenging hillsides. These early morning sessions were meticulously planned to ensure I was adequately prepared and got the necessary training in before commencing my demanding workday. This collective effort, encompassing both the creative fundraising and the rigorous physical preparation, stood as a profound and moving demonstration of unparalleled community solidarity and unwavering personal commitment.

The Unforgettable Ecuador Trek: A Journey of Physical and Emotional Endurance

“I realized that I could talk for hours about the experience and still not convey its meaning to me.”

Navigating the Exhilarating Heights of the Andes

JK: The Ecuador trek brought together 115 realtors, dynamically divided into four distinct groups, each comprising approximately 30 determined individuals. Our particular group commenced its transformative journey on November 10th, with the final group setting off on the 16th. Every Challenge for Shelter trek, by its very nature, presents its own unique set of difficulties and demanding conditions. However, in Ecuador, the paramount and most relentless challenge was, without a shadow of a doubt, the extreme altitude. For someone like myself, accustomed to living at sea level and possessing absolutely no prior experience with high-altitude hiking, I truly, and perhaps naively, underestimated its sheer intensity and profound impact on the human body.

Our arduous ascent began at an elevation of approximately 3,000 meters (about 9,842 feet). On our second day, we successfully summited the majestic Mt. Pasochoa, reaching an impressive and dizzying height of 4,200 meters (approximately 13,780 feet). The subsequent three days were spent traversing challenging elevations that ranged between 3,300 and 3,600 meters (roughly 10,827 to 11,811 feet). Mt. Pasochoa proved to be the single most arduous and physically demanding segment of the entire hike for me. It was an grueling 11-hour day, relentless under constantly varying conditions of intense sun, chilling rain, and even unexpected, stinging hail. Breathing became an immense, constant struggle; it felt as though my lungs could never fully draw in a sufficient amount of air, leaving me gasping for breath. Thankfully, beyond some transient dizziness and a persistent headache, I was spared from severe altitude sickness, but the continuous, desperate battle for breath served as a powerful, humbling reminder of the extreme and unforgiving environment we were navigating.

Battling the Elements and the Relentless March of Cumulative Fatigue

While the terrain for the remainder of the trip, in comparison, was somewhat less technically demanding, the cumulative physiological effects began to take their inevitable toll. The persistent, energy-sapping altitude, coupled with a chronic lack of consistent, restorative sleep, the pervasive cold weather, and the frequent, drenching rain, collectively conspired to make each successive day feel harder than the last. Maintaining morale, fostering a positive outlook, and simply mustering the sheer will to keep moving forward became a daily, internal mental and physical struggle. It was a constant exercise in profound resilience, an ongoing process of drawing deep strength from the powerful, unspoken collective spirit of the group, where every participant offered silent encouragement and unwavering support to one another.

One of the most striking and unforgettable aspects of hiking at such high altitudes was the dramatic, almost instantaneous, and often unpredictable shifts in weather patterns. We would frequently awaken to frigid, biting temperatures of 3-4 degrees Celsius (around 37-39 Fahrenheit), with everything inside and outside our tents damp, sometimes even saturated, from overnight rain. Yet, by the afternoon, we could find ourselves hiking under brilliantly clear, intensely sunny skies with temperatures soaring to 25 degrees Celsius (77 Fahrenheit). In such conditions, even applying SPF 50 sunscreen offered barely adequate protection from the fierce, intense solar radiation. Then, almost like clockwork around 3:00 PM, thick, ominous clouds would swiftly roll in, bringing with them a sudden deluge of rain that could last anywhere from a mere hour to an entire, miserable night. One particularly memorable night, temperatures plummeted dramatically below freezing, and we awoke to a campsite completely frozen over, a stark, breathtaking reminder of nature’s raw, untamed power and its inherent unpredictability.

Profound Reflections: Unpacking the True Meaning of the Challenge

Unveiling the Hidden Realities of Domestic Violence Through Shared Stories

JK: Beyond the demanding physical trials and the breathtaking landscapes, perhaps the most profoundly impactful and emotionally resonant element of the trek was the daily sharing of deeply personal stories. Each evening, we would gather and hear poignant, often heartbreaking, accounts from colleagues who had been directly or indirectly touched by the pervasive issue of domestic violence. These were not abstract statistics or distant reports; they were heartfelt, raw narratives from the very people we were hiking alongside, individuals who had faced immense personal struggles or tragically witnessed them firsthand within their own circles.

These powerful, shared testimonies served as a stark, humbling, and unforgettable reminder: we often walk beside individuals whose lives are marked by unseen battles and profound internal struggles. Domestic violence is far more pervasive, insidious, and closer to home than many of us ever truly realize. It powerfully highlighted the critical, life-saving importance of organizations like the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation, which stand as essential lifelines, offering refuge, support, and hope to those in desperate need. Thankfully, a significant number of these courageously shared stories concluded with a powerful note of hope and resilience, vividly illustrating how safe shelters, comprehensive support networks, and professional counseling can indeed facilitate profound positive transformations and pave the way for new, safe beginnings. The ongoing need, however, remains profoundly great, underscoring the enduring urgency and critical importance of our collective efforts. Being an active part of this truly amazing trek, and contributing directly to such vital, impactful work, was an incredibly moving, deeply humbling, and ultimately transformative experience.

Empowerment Through Collective Action and Heightened Awareness

TL: Throughout the challenging yet ultimately rewarding trek, my thoughts frequently turned to the countless women and families who confront the immense, unimaginable strength required to face the daunting unknown—whether they are trapped within an abusive situation or, with incredible courage, gathering the resolve to leave one. As Jana so eloquently articulated, the daily letters recounting these raw, emotional experiences were profoundly moving, leaving a heavy, indelible imprint on your heart. They brought home the immense gravity of the cause and the very real, deeply human impact we were striving so earnestly to alleviate.

It’s remarkably easy to feel insignificant when considering grand, systemic challenges, to question whether one person’s individual efforts can truly make a meaningful difference. However, this transformative experience unequivocally proved that simply showing up, committing wholeheartedly to a formidable challenge, truly does create significant impact. Initially, I genuinely questioned my ability to raise the $6,000 minimum required to participate in the trek. Yet, through sheer determination, innovative fundraising, and an incredible outpouring of community support, I nearly doubled that challenging amount. When we view our individual contributions as an integral part of the larger whole, the impressive $1.7 million raised collectively represents a truly significant sum, one capable of enacting profound, tangible, and effective change across countless lives.

Moreover, I firmly believe these challenges do far more than just raise critical funds; they significantly heighten public awareness and garner vital, sustained support for women trapped in abusive situations and for the shelters that tirelessly serve them. It’s a powerful, compounding effect: the physical act of trekking inspires generous donations, the deeply personal stories shared foster profound empathy and understanding, and the collective achievement shines a bright, much-needed spotlight on an often-hidden societal issue, thereby encouraging broader public understanding and fostering a long-term commitment to positive change. This continuous, self-reinforcing cycle of awareness, dedicated fundraising, and unwavering support is what truly drives lasting, systemic transformation.

“I am really proud to be part of a company that cares about people — they really do from the top, down.”

– Tina Lynch

Beyond the physical rigors of traversing the majestic Andes, it was a profound journey of personal growth, collective empowerment, and an unshakeable commitment to making a tangible, life-changing difference in the lives of those most affected by domestic violence. These remarkable realtors, through their incredible, selfless efforts, continue to build not just homes and communities, but also, and perhaps most importantly, hope, safety, and a brighter future for the most vulnerable members of our society.
