Sheri Willick Takes the Helm as Saskatchewan Realtors Association Chairperson

Sheri Willick Leads Saskatchewan Realtors Association into a New Era

Saskatoon native Sheri Willick, a highly respected figure in the province’s real estate sector, proudly assumes the role of 2021 Chairperson for the Board of Directors at the Saskatchewan Realtors Association (SRA). Her appointment marks a pivotal moment for the association as it navigates a dynamic real estate landscape, building upon a foundation laid during an unprecedented year.

“Real estate, for me, is more than just transactions; it’s about connection and service,” says Willick. “My diverse professional journey, encompassing business administration, media advertising, sales experience, and extensive work with local non-profit organizations, converges perfectly in this role. It allows me to apply a holistic approach to better connect with and serve the SRA and its valued members.” This unique blend of expertise positions her as a formidable leader, capable of steering the SRA through its strategic objectives while fostering strong community ties.

A Legacy of Excellence and Community Dedication

Willick’s commitment to excellence and community engagement is well-documented. In 2019, her exceptional contributions to the industry were recognized when she was named the CMHC Realtor of the Year for Saskatoon and Region. This prestigious award underscores her dedication, professionalism, and significant impact on clients and peers within the vibrant Saskatoon real estate market. Such accolades are not merely personal achievements; they reflect a standard of practice that the SRA aims to uphold and promote across Saskatchewan.

Beyond her professional triumphs, Sheri Willick is deeply ingrained in her community through various volunteer endeavors. She serves as a dedicated member of the United Way of Saskatoon’s Campaign Cabinet, a testament to her belief in giving back and supporting vital local initiatives. This spirit of altruism extends to her personal life, where she, alongside her husband Jason, is a devoted parent to their two daughters. Her balanced approach to career, community, and family life exemplifies the well-rounded leadership essential for an organization like the SRA.

Navigating the Storm: Amalgamation and the Pandemic

The year 2020 presented a confluence of monumental challenges for the Saskatchewan real estate community, demanding resilience and rapid adaptation. “We understood the magnitude of the task ahead in 2020, primarily due to the recent amalgamation of the Regina, Saskatoon, and Saskatchewan Realtor Associations,” Willick reflects. This merger was a strategic move to create a unified voice and stronger operational framework for real estate professionals across the province, but it came with its own set of complexities in harmonizing different regional cultures and operational procedures.

Just as the newly formed SRA began to chart its course, the global COVID-19 pandemic struck, fundamentally altering the entire landscape. “Then the pandemic hit, forcing us to completely re-evaluate our entire strategic plan, from its conceptualization right through to its execution,” Willick explains. This unprecedented crisis necessitated immediate and decisive action, pushing the SRA to pivot rapidly, ensuring the safety of its members and clients while striving to maintain essential real estate services. The amalgamation itself, while challenging, arguably provided a more robust and unified front to tackle the unexpected demands of the pandemic.

SRA’s Proactive Advocacy: Safeguarding the Industry

In response to the extraordinary circumstances of 2020, the SRA’s Government Relations staff spearheaded several critical advocacy initiatives, proving instrumental in safeguarding the ability of Realtors to continue conducting business safely and effectively. These efforts were vital for both the real estate professionals and the countless Saskatchewan residents relying on their services for housing and investment needs. The association’s proactive stance highlighted its core mission: to support its members and protect the public interest.

Among the significant legislative and regulatory victories secured were crucial amendments to The Real Estate Act. These changes specifically allowed for the remote witnessing of mandatory forms, a critical innovation during a period when in-person interactions were either restricted or deemed risky. This technological adaptation not only streamlined processes but also ensured that real estate transactions could proceed without undue delay, maintaining the flow of the housing market.

Furthermore, the SRA successfully advocated for changes to The Non-profit Corporation Act, which permitted virtual annual general meetings (AGMs). This legislative flexibility was paramount for the SRA and other non-profit organizations to maintain democratic governance and fulfill statutory obligations without compromising public health. These adaptations underscored the association’s commitment to modernizing practices and ensuring business continuity under challenging conditions.

Perhaps the most essential victory, however, was guaranteeing “allowable service status” for Realtors during the initial government lockdowns. This designation was critical because it meant that real estate activities, deemed vital for the province’s economy and social fabric, could cautiously continue. It allowed Realtors to safely assist clients with critical housing needs, whether buying or selling, under strict health and safety protocols. This advocacy success not only protected the livelihoods of many real estate professionals but also provided stability for the housing market during a period of immense uncertainty, demonstrating the SRA’s unwavering commitment to its members and the broader community it serves.

Strategic Governance: The SRA Board of Directors

The Saskatchewan Realtors Association operates under the astute guidance of a 12-member Board of Directors, a body meticulously structured to ensure diverse representation and robust governance. The board comprises four representatives each from the key regions of Regina, Saskatoon, and the broader province of Saskatchewan. This equitable distribution ensures that the unique needs, challenges, and opportunities of various regional markets are thoroughly considered in the SRA’s strategic planning and decision-making processes. This geographically balanced approach is fundamental to fostering a truly provincial association that serves all its members effectively.

The Board of Directors is entrusted with the monumental responsibility of overseeing the SRA’s strategic vision. This includes setting long-term goals, developing policies that enhance the professionalism and ethical conduct of Realtors, and advocating for the best interests of the industry and the public. Their role is not just supervisory; it’s about proactive leadership, anticipating future trends, and ensuring the association remains relevant and impactful in a rapidly evolving market.

To ensure continuity, stability, and the integration of fresh perspectives, board directors serve a two-year term, with terms strategically staggered. This deliberate structure means that at any given time, the board is a dynamic mix of experienced members who provide institutional knowledge and new members who bring innovative ideas and diverse viewpoints. This blend of seasoned wisdom and new energy is crucial for maintaining the SRA’s forward momentum and adaptability.

The SRA is excited to welcome its newest directors, who are poised to contribute significantly to the association’s mission. These individuals bring varied backgrounds and insights to the table: Jeremy Cossette from Regina; Kathy Fehr-Yung representing Saskatchewan at large; Henry Moulin from Saskatoon; and Donna Nyeste, another valuable addition from the broader Saskatchewan region. Their collective expertise will undoubtedly enrich the board’s discussions and decisions, helping to shape the future of real estate in the province.

Complementing the new additions is a strong cohort of returning members, whose continued service provides invaluable experience and a seamless transition of leadership. This esteemed group includes the current Chairperson, Sheri Willick, from Saskatoon; Jordan Barry, also from Saskatoon; Lane Boghean from Regina; Sara McKinley from Regina; Tim Otitoju from Regina, who served as the past chairperson and continues to offer his wisdom; Avril Reifferscheid from Saskatchewan, designated as the chairperson-elect, signaling future leadership; Jeff Stewart from Saskatoon; and Warren Vandenameele, representing the wider Saskatchewan area. This blend of continuity and renewal is a hallmark of effective governance, ensuring that the SRA remains strong, adaptable, and forward-thinking.

Acknowledging Past Contributions: Building on a Strong Foundation

“As we look ahead, it’s equally important to acknowledge the incredible contributions of those who have helped lay the groundwork,” states Sheri Willick. “We extend our deepest gratitude to the four directors from 2020 who have concluded their terms for their tremendous service to both the association and the wider real estate industry.” The dedication of outgoing leaders is often the unsung hero in organizational success, and the SRA ensures their legacy is recognized.

These departing directors – Norm Fisher, Richelle Rogers, Lynn Chipley, and Dave Markus – played a crucial role, particularly during the SRA’s inaugural year following the complex amalgamation. Their commitment was paramount during a period of significant structural change and unexpected global challenges. Willick emphasizes, “They generously dedicated their time, offered sound advice, and provided invaluable insights during the association’s formative year. Their efforts were instrumental in establishing a strong, resilient foundation upon which the new board can confidently continue to build and expand.” This continuity of leadership and respect for past achievements ensures that the SRA’s journey forward is rooted in a robust and well-supported history, promising a bright future for real estate professionals across Saskatchewan.
